What is the Fragrance wheel?

Perfumery taxonomist Michael Edwards invented the fragrance wheel in 1992. The wheel is significantly a circular diagram that has different labels referring to the nature and character of the perfume.

The fragrance wheel is one of the relevant tools uses in the art of perfumery, but it was slightly set up as just a diagram to differentiate the notes and scent of the perfume by an Austrian perfumer Paul Jellinek;  which was seen in his book The Practice of Modern Perfumery in 1949 as Odor Effects Diagram. Moving on to next year’s U. Harder at Haarman & Reimer stated the concept as Fragrance circle in 1979. Later on, In the next few years, a sensory chemist Ann C. Noble justify the classification as The Wine Aroma Wheel in 1984;  last the general term says that the perfume expert Michael Edwards have introduced the Fragrance wheel firstly in 1992

Formation of fragrance family

Perfumes are the distinct mixture of essential oil, aromatic elements or other solvents; The flower, woods, leaves and animal bodies are the parent of those additives. These perfumes have levels and each level has the taste of distinctive ingredients; Recipe to form a liquid concoction for a unique scent. After the composition, the variation of their additives is responsible for classifying and assembling the essence into its unique family. If we consider the leading dominant characteristics, there are four major categories of these family Floral, Oriental, Woody and Fresh. Know that every rare perfume and odour is based on their family.

 

Floral

One of the most popular and famed among the families of fragrances; floral. whenever it comes to a romantic and amorous encompassing, flowers are the ones that came up in our mind at first. Born and brought up by the nature, signifying the fact of the original aspect of smell. the floral family defines as the assemblage of fragrances derived from blooming flowers that accords the marvellously sweat and classic sniff.

The floral family breached up into three subfamilies Floral, Soft Floral and Floral Oriental.

Oriental

The Oriental fragrance opens the door to imagination and fantasy, along with peculiarly spicy, powdery and warm notes. this family is stamped as the most seductive and sensual form. In the Oriental family, an immense spirit of a captivating brew is formed with the additives like amber, resins, sweet vanilla, and other warm species designed for an exciting, tactile and sensuous smell.

The oriental family split up into Soft Oriental, Floral Oriental and Woody Oriental as its subfamily.

Woody

As the name implies, the composition of warm woody elements is poured into those fragrances that came under the wings of the almighty woody family. Woody Family subjectify an intensely dry, earthy and exotic scent blends up from the warm, dry and classic notes such as sandalwood, cedarwood, bark, pinecones and leather. The fragrances in these families are generally devised for formal and ceremonial meetups.

The woody family is divided into four subfamilies: woods, mossy woods, dry woods, and aromatic woods.

Fresh

A fresh family of fragrances binds up all the fresh and natural scents that were ever brought up. It’s the most popular and uplifting family among all, usually also termed as a Citrus, herbal or green family. With the gratifying and delighting notes of fresh grass, stem, herbs and leaves, the fresh family ceased to create an enthralling and appealing aroma.

The fresh family is categorized into five subfamilies that are aromatic, Citrus, Aquatic, green or fruity.
